18 October 2018 – Split. On October 18 2018, a two-day International Conference “Strategic Approach to the Development of Smart Cities” was held in Split, organized by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds. Ministress Gabrijela Žalac opened the conference solemnly and stressed that the conference was organized within the promotional campaign “Croatia we want” as part of the National Development Strategy development process by 2030 and the Republic of Croatia’s preparations for the EU program period after 2020. The conference brought together many domestic and foreign strategic planning experts who through their presentations presented their own experience in the area of strategic planning and development management on the development of smart cities from New York, Amsterdam, Dubai. Also, their knowledge and experience was presented by representatives of renowned Croatian companies of Croatian Telecom d.d., Petrola, Ericsson Nikola Tesla d.d., Siemens Hrvatska and Ampelos d.o.o. The emphasis was on solutions to infrastructure problems that will grow over the years, creating a sense of alienation among citizens. Troubleshooting is called smart cities – Smart Cities that use the sphere of related information and communication technologies to try to change the way we live, travel, spend, and spend their free time in cities. Experts’ experiences show innovations that at first glance are very simple and obvious, but when introduced, they are accepted by the citizen (introducing payment of SMS parking, smart bench, control and supervision of the entire fleet …). Also during the conference is an example of the implementation of integrated territorial investment for urban areas that is successfully implemented in the Republic of Croatia. The two-day conference enabled key stakeholders in urban development in the Republic of Croatia to see examples of best practices for the development and management of smart cities in order to jointly implement some of these experiences and innovative solutions in the Republic of Croatia to contribute to the social and economic growth of the Republic of Croatia and to increase the quality of life of citizens in all parts of our country.
